JJ finds his inspiration from various sources like most artists do but his first and still very relevant influence came from reading loads of comic books at a young age. This inspired him to start drawing and get into art even more. The first artist that JJ became obsessed with was M.C. Escher, even if he didn’t fully understand or even like modern, abstract art back then. Currently JJ’s work doesn’t aim to say anything in specific but this can differ according to what inspires him at that moment or what mood he was in when creating the work. He explains: “However in some of my favourite works, and a new series that I’m currently working on, I try to imagine visiting a different universe. An alternate, abstract reality where everything that surrounds you is simplified into shapes and colours.”
